Severely Neglected Dog Was Giving Up On Life, But Then This Miracle Happened
An abandoned dog was found starving and close to death in a crate in Austin, Texas. The dog’s condition was so bad that people initially thought she was dead.Credit
Bones were sticking out everywhere and the poor dog was covered in feces. It was a tragic thing to see. Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Division got to the scene, thinking they were there to collect a dead animal and realized that the dog was still alive. She was rushed to the Austin Animal Center for immediate treatment. Detective Ewa Wagner who was on the scene saw some movement from the suffering, emaciated dog.Credit
“We realized [the dog] was alive, but just barely, so we rushed her to the Austin Animal Center where vets began emergency treatment,” Officer Wagner reporters. It turns out, the helpless animal was a puppy. According to veterinary technician Elizabeth Mancera the cold and wet dog had a temperature too low to register on their thermometers.Credit
“The day she came in was a really hard day,” Elizabeth explained. “She was not really moving. She was barely breathing. She couldn’t stand.” Elizabeth talked to the dog that was named Sophie and slowly raised her temperature and nursed her back to health. She used a combination of warm baths and a hairdryer to warm the dog up. “During those first few hours I just talked to her and told her she was loved,” Elizabeth said.Credit
After a few days, Sophie was strong enough to walk again. For a while, the dog had to wear diapers. “When I called her Sophie, she kind of looked at me, and that’s when I just knew she was going to be OK,” Elizabeth said. Elisabeth was ecstatic with Sophie’s recovery and after a few weeks of TLC, the dog was up to a healthy 25 pounds. Unable to let go of the dog, Elizabeth adopted Sophie herself.
“When she first came in, she was this sweet little thing that couldn’t do anything, and now she runs around like a crazy diva,” she said, adding, “She’s very playful. She has a lot of spirit.” Elizabeth has been keeping us updated on Instagram and Sophie has fully recovered, fit and healthy and receiving heaps of love.
